The Last of Us Part II was a real plebiscite: applauded by the national and international press, it fully convinced us too, as you can read in the review.
If you haven't done it yet, you can buy it here, some pieces of the collector's edition may still be available.
However, ours was not an easy journey, indeed, but facing it in its most raw and relentless nature has allowed us to put in focus what are the priorities in this long journey of revenge where nothing is as it really seems Ellie's survival depends above all on you. So here are 10 useful tips to get out of a collapsing world alive.
1. Take the time to explore
The Last of Us Part II has grown a lot compared to the first chapter: it means being faced with much larger areas, each of which hides something, from a greater number of resources to better equipment, sometimes hidden in safes while others are only there, waiting to be found. Do not be put off by a closed door and do not rush to continue. Every ravine can hide a secret and it would be a shame not to get fully involved in Naughty Dog's work.
2. You consume resources when you have too many
It may seem like obvious advice, or crazy depending on your point of view, but Ellie has limited inventory to contend with. If even at the highest difficulty we found ourselves having reached the limit of resources, aware that there are less of them distributed throughout the game, we can imagine with a more contained level of challenge how much more generous it can be.
When you happen not to be able to collect a rag, a bottle or waste materials because you are at most transportable, check your inventory and evaluate whether it is not appropriate to use them to create something: it is not necessarily useful but not being able retrace your steps after completing a macro area, you might as well not abandon the resources to their fate.
3. There is no single approach to overcoming enemies
The improvements made to the level design and greater freedom of movement for Ellie made The Last of Us Part II a much more varied experience in terms of possible solutions to escape the enemies. Direct confrontation is rarely the best solution, especially against the infected, but the fight itself can be avoided if you feel you don't have to (or want to) do it.
As bloodthirsty as she is, Ellie's goal is very specific and it is not necessary to make her a modern day Rambo: look around, study the environment, use the skills available and the listening mode to get an idea of the surroundings and choose the approach that you feel best suited to the situation. In short, take your time. Nobody runs after you.
4. Make sure you are always ready before a fight
Sometimes you will have to face open confrontations. They are not telephoned, it is difficult to predict when it will happen, so always keep an eye on ammunition and make sure you have a melee weapon with you: although some infected can be attacked with bare hands without risk, the Clickers remain the more common and lethal in this sense. You can't approach them without having something to defend yourself with, and Ellie's switchblade is not considered in this sense. Remember this when you see them running towards you.
5. Dodge, dodge, dodge!
Perhaps the absolute blessing of the whole game, dodging is the element that we would have wanted already in the first chapter and for which we were finally satisfied. It will be your lifesaver on numerous occasions and, if used with the right timing, will allow you to take advantage of any opponent, from humans to infected of any category. You could even face a whole fight with runners and stalkers with your bare hands, if you don't want to waste bullets, but always make sure you have your back covered or not be overwhelmed: the enemies are certainly not there waiting their turn before they hit you.
6. Let him who is without sin throw the first brick
If you think that bricks and empty bottles serve only as a distraction, now is the time to change your mind: in The Last of Us Part II you have the possibility of using them also in combat to stun enemies on the fly, using the rapid launch, and deliver them a lethal blow. This is also true in the stealth phases but it is certainly more recommended in heated clashes, especially against Clickers: if you manage to stun them, you can eliminate them in one shot even without having a melee weapon with you. But be careful because you can only carry one of these items with you at a time, use it wisely.
7. The knife is your best friend
Ellie's absolute advantage is her switchblade. Where with Joel, in the first chapter, you were forced to build knives from time to time ready to break at the first use on an unsuspecting enemy, our young protagonist can exploit her own at will without fear of it breaking: this is particularly useful against Clickers, who can be caught in the back and eliminated in one fell swoop as long as they remain unaware of your presence. Remember this when planning a silent assault.
8. To each his own abilities
The Last of Us Part II features two playable characters, Ellie and another whose identity we won't reveal. Each has their own branches of skills, some already unlocked and others obtainable by reading the related training manuals that you will find scattered around the game world.
Do not rush to unlock everything immediately (for that there is the New Game +), instead focus on which skill is akin to your style of play and adjust accordingly: you may have to compromise to get to the one that interests you but you will discover, one once obtained, how much it was worth it. To learn a skill you need to consume supplements, so we go back to the first tip and remind you to thoroughly explore each area to make sure you don't forget anything behind.
9. Leave the dirty work to your partner too
In some sections you will be accompanied by a character controlled by artificial intelligence, who for most of the time undertakes not to be discovered during the stealth phases but is also able to adapt to your style and help you eliminate enemies in silence ( we'll talk about it in the next tip). When things start to get hotter, for example in open fights, it's always a good idea to leave some of the work to him who, in addition to having great aim, can also temporarily block enemies to allow you to land an attack. lethal. Make the most of this new artificial intelligence, otherwise what is there to do?
10. Customize your game however you like
The beauty of The Last of Us Part II also lies in the large amount of options to customize your game. Accessibility was the key word around which the developers concentrated and the efforts paid off with a level of customization that counts as many as sixty options: from those specific to people with specific disabilities, for example visually impaired, to others designed to deepen the difficulty without limiting it to the choice of modality per se.
For example, after selecting “Survivor” all other options will adapt accordingly but you can go and tweak them to decide your challenge rate. You may want to keep the complexity of the puzzles to the maximum but improve the interaction of your partner, who will tend to be passive at the most difficult, or mitigate the ferocity of the enemy AI. It all depends on you, on the use you want to make of an accessibility that Naughty Dog entrusts totally to your hands.
