SEGA acquires Rovio, the Angry Birds Studio

Some moves that take place in the world of video games can be quite surprising, and at first glance, Sega's acquisition of Rovio is one of them.

After all, it is not so immediate to think that the Angry Birds series (which you can find at GameStop with this link) can go hand in hand with Sonic.

Yet the news, which had been circulating for a few days, quickly became official, as per the official press release reported by Derek Strickland of Tweak Town.

The takeover is expected to close at €706 million, and the handover has been approved favorably by all levels of the company, both management and shareholders. The operations are expected to close in the second quarter of this fiscal year (June/July/August 2023).

This is a very curious handover, as the brand's gaming potential has definitely diminished over the years. Similarly, even in terms of brand diffusion for TV and cinema productions, the parable is descending, although the potential remains important.

From this point of view, if we consider Sega not only as a developer but as a whole of the Sega Sammy holding, we can imagine that the brand will find space in many situations outside of the video game. Between Pachinko, merchandise, music, and feature films, the possibilities are endless.
