Finally here we are: from 23 July 2021 the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will officially open their doors, with many national teams ready to bring home as many medals as possible.
It is an unrepeatable event and honor for the Rising Sun which returns to host this huge event for the second time since 1964.
But before the Covid-19 emergency forced the postponement of the start dates of the Games by 12 months, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games debuted in Japan two years ago – The official video game, developed by SEGA with the intent to ride the wave of enthusiasm.
In fact, right here on our pages, we have already faced some Olympic disciplines with Mario & Sonic at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and we didn’t think about going back to swimming again, running 100m and throwing some Jab with Boxing.
In the official video game we will be able to enjoy 18 different disciplines, including Sport Climbing, Tennis, Beach Volleyball and Long Jump. Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games is presented to us as an experience from the arcade nature in which there are some bizarre and extravagant elements to which SEGA has accustomed us over the years: just think how much it can make you sweat running with the Sonic costume. The 18 disciplines are very varied, from team sports to individual ones, and include two preliminary and one final rounds. If for the first you can get away with it without too many worries, for the last session, to win one of the three medals, some difficulties could arise. Obviously it depends a lot on the discipline and the player’s approach to a particular sport.
We do not hide from you, however, that we felt a few moments of frustration, but not so much for a level of challenge that all in all can be faced, as for an arcade nature that sometimes leaves a little dumbfounded. To be clear, we had the feeling that the CPU difficulty has been calibrated in such a way as to force us to make some mistakes.
To give you an example, it could happen that in a Beach Volleyball match our partner deliberately misses the decisive point to win the gold or even commit a completely avoidable imprudence. Or better still in basketball, despite perfect timing, while making a dunk to the basket our avatar finds himself making a mistake (especially in the final).
We agree that the difficulty must be increasing in the three sets for each Olympic game that we are going to play, but the same must be as realistic as possible despite the nature of the game being purely arcade.
And it seems that this arcade nature goes to justify some shortcomings for certain sports that sometimes seem more driven by random events rather than by the player’s skills. The feeling you breathe is of entertainment, but which is sometimes drastically reduced due to the lack of a certain depth in the disciplines.
Each medal won in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will entitle us to points, which can be spent no less to enrich the wardrobe and consequently compete in the competitions with the pirate suit or better still as an astronaut. In reality you would be disqualified before now, but this aspect fits perfectly with the cartoon style and a little super deformed of the “funny athletes”.
If the gold goes a bit tight, we will be able to challenge athletes of extreme difficulty intent on making us understand that we must deserve first place. In these circumstances it will be necessary to make your fingers ache, especially in the obstacle course or in the long jump, to come out triumphant.
The timing of execution is fundamental for the success of almost all the Games : it is necessary to perfectly calculate the “right moment” in each discipline to be able to reach high goals. In the long jump, to give you an example, it will be important to match a decent speed to the perfect point where you jump to get super momentum.
When we have conquered the gold almost everywhere we will be able to throw ourselves in the ranked matches and challenge the other athletes of the globe. In this mode we will find disciplines divided by time slot and in blocks of three, so you must be lucky to challenge someone in your favorite sport. All in all it is a shareable choice, so the community can delight in all sports avoiding always choosing the most popular disciplines.
Conclusions
Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games – the official video game is the classic sports arcade suitable for the whole family that obviously brings out the true essence when played with friends. Unfortunately, due to its simplistic nature and the lack of a proper career mode, it pays likelihood on its replayability.
After earning all the medals in the 18 disciplines, in fact, we are not sure that players will be able to have fun in the long run in the online mode. The feeling was to find yourself in an arcade game that wants to expand a part of its roots in sports simulation, consequently creating events based on forced randomness.
Tokyo Olympic Games – the official video game, however, if taken as a simple family video game, could give you some really carefree moments.
